An Early Fall
Today the clouds look like the sea.
The world, it changes rapidly
as cold winds rust the last green leaves
and cause the birds to hide or flee,
safely south, but they’re not me.
I’ll wait out winter’s tragedy:
the death of firefly’s and bees.
For, I heard a voice from Galilee
say all of us participate in this cleansing
fall that strips away our outer shell,
brings desolation; new lives hidden
in heavy, holy, off-white linens.
